October 2025 – Magnets, Might, and Morality: The Economic Cold War to Preserve the American Dream

Magnets, Might, and Morality: The Economic Cold War to Preserve the American Dream

By Vaughn Woods, CFP, MBA

The air in Washington D.C. is charged with an unmistakable tension.

President Trump, a man who knows how to cut through the noise, has unleashed a torrent of statements this October that should serve as a wake-up call to every American. His declaration today that there’s “no reason” to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the end of October, coupled with threats of “a massive increase of tariffs on Chinese products,” isn’t just about trade. It’s a stark, necessary revelation that the gloves are off in what is rapidly becoming a full-blown Economic Cold War—a struggle for global leadership and, critically, for the preservation of the American way of life, founded on spiritual values, self-reliance, and freedom from government overreach.

At the heart of this confrontation is something deceptively mundane: rare earth elements. These aren’t just technical components; they are the bedrock of our modern technological world, the silent heroes in everything from your family’s smartphones to the advanced missiles protecting our nation. And China, through decades of strategic foresight and, frankly, predatory practices, has cornered this vital market. This isn’t just a supply chain issue; it’s an attempt at economic blackmail, a brazen grab for global leverage that threatens our prosperity and, more profoundly, our sovereignty.

President Trump’s anger, evident in his pronouncements, is not just political rhetoric. He accuses China of becoming “very hostile,” and threatening to impose export controls on these critical elements. This isn’t a trade dispute; it’s a strategic weaponization of a critical resource, designed to cripple global markets and make life “difficult for virtually every Country in the World.” This audacious move, following a period Trump described as a “very good relationship,” smacks of a calculated betrayal—one that should remind us of the biblical truth that we must be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

The Monopoly of Magnets: A Stranglehold on American Independence

To truly grasp the gravity of this situation, we must see rare earth elements not as raw materials, but as the keys to our future independence. These 17 metallic elements—such as neodymium and dysprosium—are essential for their unique magnetic, catalytic, and optical properties.

For decades, while Americans were focused on higher pursuits and burdened by restrictive environmental policies, China invested heavily in rare earth mining and processing. They subsidized their industry, often turning a blind eye to environmental regulations, and aggressively seized control of the entire supply chain. Today, the reality is sobering: China controls over 80% of the world’s refined rare earth supply. This isn’t just market dominance; it’s a chokehold on the world’s technological future.

The “Magnets” Trump refers to are particularly crucial. Neodymium is key to the powerful permanent magnets essential for electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and, most critically, precision-guided munitions and advanced radar systems for our military. The idea that a hostile, authoritarian regime could restrict our access to the components for our own defense is a direct threat to our national security and a profound challenge to our commitment to a strong, independent America.

More Than Economics: A Battle for the American Soul

President Trump’s warning that “There is no way that China should be allowed to hold the World ‘captive’,” is not hyperbole; it’s a candid assessment of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) long-term objectives.

The current economic cold war is a battle for global hegemony, but it is also an ideological contest. The CCP aims to displace the United States as the world’s leading economic and military power, and their goal is not merely a change in trade figures; it’s a fundamental assault on the values that define American life:

  • Loss of Spiritual Values and Individual Liberty: The American experience, built on the Judeo-Christian ethic, prizes the dignity of the individual, freedom of conscience, and the right to practice faith without government interference. The CCP offers the opposite: a completely authoritarian, state-controlled model that crushes dissent, persecutes religious minorities, and places the state above God and family. China’s vision for the world is one where social independence is replaced by governmental control—a future that would fundamentally undermine the spiritual and moral framework of the West.
  • Erosion of Economic Self-Reliance: Since the 1972 Nixon-Kissinger opening—a time most of your readers remember as a period of genuine American independence and strength—we made a fateful bet. We hoped that integrating China into the global community would lead to political liberalization. Instead, it led to the outsourcing of our manufacturing base, the theft of our intellectual property, and an over-reliance on a rival power. This economic dependency is a profound step back from the rugged individualism and entrepreneurial spirit that built this nation. The goal of this administration’s confrontation is to reverse this trend: to bring our supply chains home, rebuild our industrial strength, and restore the social independence that comes with a nation that can clothe, feed, and defend itself.
  • The Weaponization of Technology: Beyond rare earths, China is engaged in a relentless pursuit of technological supremacy, often through industrial espionage and the outright theft of American intellectual property. Their goal is to control the future technologies that drive global commerce and military power, putting us and our children under their influence. This is a direct challenge to the free-market principles that have fueled American innovation and prosperity for centuries.

What This Means for You: Reclaiming the Future

This Economic Cold War is not an abstract game. It is a defining moment that will profoundly affect the lives of every American citizen, particularly the legacy we leave for future generations.

Impact Explanation
National Security China’s rare earth monopoly directly threatens our military superiority. Maintaining a strong national defense is the first duty of any government and a guarantee of our continued ability to act freely on the global stage.
Cost and Availability Chinese leverage over supply chains will lead to higher prices, shortages, and a slowdown in the technological advancement that underpins our American lifestyle, from medicine to agriculture.
Spiritual & Cultural Freedom The outcome will influence the global spread of ideas, human rights, and the very future of open societies. Victory ensures that democratic values, individual freedoms, and the right to private property—principles deeply rooted in the Christian worldview—will continue to light the path for the world.
The Value of Your Net Worth Your investments and retirement savings are directly tied to the ability of American businesses to compete fairly and innovate freely, without being held hostage by foreign monopolies. American prosperity depends on American strength.

Export to Sheets

President Trump’s aggressive stance highlights a critical turning point. His threat to counter China’s monopoly with American “monopoly positions” suggests a willingness to use all available economic tools to level the playing field. This will undoubtedly be a painful process, but it is a necessary action to restore our self-reliance.

The U.S. must swiftly implement strategies to onshore rare earth mining and processing, diversify its supply chains through alliances with nations like Australia and Canada, and invest heavily in recycling and alternative material research.

This is a cold war of economics, innovation, and resolve. The stakes are immense, and the future of a free, independent, and spiritually vibrant America hangs in the balance. The path ahead will be challenging, but for the sake of our economic prosperity, national security, and the preservation of our freedoms, the United States must confront this challenge head-on. The dragon has shown its teeth, and America must respond with unwavering strength and the strategic foresight to remain dependent only on ourselves and on our faith in God’s greater plan for our children.
